Kelley Armstrong's three YA books for your young ones
This week's guest curator for our Canadian content recommendations is Kelley Armstrong, the #1 New York Times-bestselling author of three trilogies for teens: Darkest Powers, Darkness Rising, and Age of Legends. Kelley has a long list of top-selling novels, including several thriller and fantasy series for adults such as The Masked Truth, Missing and Aftermath. She is also the co-author (with Melissa Marr) of the Blackwell Pages series, a middle-grade fantasy series based on Norse gods. Her latest book, for middle-grade readers, is The Gryphon’s Lair. Here are Kelley's three recommended reads for your kids or grandkids, including Uzma Jalaluddin's Ayesha at Last.
A sweet, funny romance that reimagines Pride and Prejudice set within the Muslim community of modern-day Toronto. The debut novel for Toronto author (and Toronto Star parenting columnist) Uzma Jalaluddin sees conservative Khalid and independent Ayesha spar delightfully as they work through their misconceptions and fall in love. While this is an adult novel, the content is suitable for teenage readers looking for their first foray into romance.

Stratford, Ontario's E.K. Johnston is probably best known for her fantasy YA novels (which are wonderful and highly recommended) but I was particularly entranced by this contemporary story. It takes a tale we all think we know (cheerleader captain gets pregnant) and upends all expectations. A powerful story with a mystery that kept me riveted to the end.

I was lucky enough to read Hartman’s debut novel (Sarafina) before it was published back in 2012, and I was thoroughly wowed by her writing. This spin-off novel did not disappoint. The Vancouver-based Hartman has crafted a wonderful YA epic fantasy novel, and I’m already hoping for more adventures with Tess.
