FRIENDS encourages the CRTC to reject a CBC proposal to place ads on Radio 2 & Espace Musique and instead proceed with the long-delayed review of the overall licensing of the Corporation's networks and services.

Dear Mr. Katz:

We have learned that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation may have approached, or may shortly approach your Commission to request an expedited hearing regarding the licence renewals of the above services in view of its April 4 announcement of its wish to place commercial messages on both radio networks.

We urge you to deny such a request. The Corporation's long-delayed licence renewal process was postponed most recently as a result of a request from the Corporation. When CBC/Radio-Canada's licensing is once again placed on your agenda, a full discussion of the role of the above services will be necessary, and should be considered in the context of your review of the overall licensing of the Corporation's networks and services.

At that time, all interested parties will have an opportunity to present their points of view, according to long-established CRTC procedures. We urge you to adhere to established process in this matter.
