Unfriend Facebook

Facebook makes you feel terrible. We're fighting back.

Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook is making billions every year by making us feel terrible. Meanwhile, the cornerstones of our culture like our movies, our books, our radio shows, our newscasts and our stories — all the things that make us feel good — are disappearing.

The government has done nothing. In fact, they've made it easy for companies like Facebook to make a buck out of our anger, fear and pain.

Here's what we're doing at FRIENDS: we're joining forces to tell the government to stop giving billions of dollars to giant tech companies like Facebook, and finally make sure the playing field is fair.

Because here's the thing: we know that when the playing field is level, when we're not letting Facebook rob us blind, our stories will win out over fake news and click bait every time.

Companies like Facebook don't contribute anything to Canadian culture and stories. They get tax breaks of all kinds worth billions, and then send that money to offshore back accounts. Their lobbyists write the Canadian laws under which the companies operate. Do we really want Mark Zuckerberg, the guy who helped get Trump elected, to be the one writing the rules on hate speech or free democratic expression in Canada?

The fact is, one government after another have been far too soft on Facebook. It's time to change that. It's time for the Government of Canada to put Candian interest, Canadian culture, and Canadian journalism ahead of lining the pockets of Silicon Valley billionaires.
