What our volunteers are watching at home

FRIENDS volunteers are essential to the success of our campaigns. During the past federal election, for example, teams of dedicated volunteers in our battleground ridings pounded the pavements, knocked on doors and met with local candidates to brief them on our issues. We reached out to some of our volunteers recently to find out what Canadian shows are helping them stay calm and connected at the moment. Here are a few shows they recommend we watch at home, plus a bonus song from one of our supporters!
During these days of social distancing, my husband and I have been watching Schitt’s Creek, written by Daniel Levy and his father Eugene Levy, who star in the series along with Catherine O’Hara. The series is about a very rich family that was swindled out of its wealth and was forced to live in a motel in the tiny town called Schitt’s Creek. The snooty family members experience extreme difficulty adjusting to such a rustic environment but receive much more acceptance from the town’s residents than they deserve. We had sporadically watched the first five seasons on CBC, but we enjoyed season six so much we decided to go back and rewatch all the episodes from start to finish. I have laughed and cried as I watched Schitt's Creek and I highly recommend that you put it on your COVID-19 watch list. — Deb Rosebrugh, London, Ontario

My family faithfully watches Murdoch Mysteries every week on CBC. We enjoy it because it reflects the social circumstances of life in Toronto in the early 20th century. Besides that, the show is filmed locally and we recognize many landmarks captured in the show. And it is just a plain old good storyline. — Brian Cumming, Dundas, Ontario

This isn't a volunteer recommendation, but I do highly recommend that you listen to this musical "gripe" by jazz vocalist and pianist Zoe Chilco, one of our talented FRIENDS supporters. There are many things we can complain about when it comes to life during this pandemic, no doubt, but there's no reason why we shouldn't laugh about them, too.
