Juno nominee iskwē's eclectic weekend mix

Today's guest curator is iskwē. The Winnipeg-born, Hamilton-based singer has emerged as one of Canada's most fearless storytellers. The pop-rock-electronic music and songs on her latest album acākosīk are deeply personal, whether they're about a friend's battle with cancer or shining a light on missing and murdered Indigenous women. Her theatrical live performances have been put on hold due to the pandemic, but she has taken to Instagram to host live chats from her living room with notable Canadians like Jann Arden and George Stroumboulopoulos. Here are iskwē's picks for your isolation viewing.

Canadian music on Spotify

I've been making a playlist on Spotify where I invite guests from my Instagram Live series, Live from My Living Room, to add two songs at the end of each episode. If they are musicians, I ask them to include one of their own plus one additional tune that they are turning to during this strange time we are living in. It's a wonderfully eclectic mix, as my guests have all been so wonderfully different from each other! You can find the playlist by following me on Spotify, and scrolling to the bottom of the page where the playlists live. Enjoy!

A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews (novel)

This is one of my absolute favourite Canadian books of all time. It had me cackle-laugh at least ten times and is definitely a book I turn to when I just want to sit back and enjoy a good story. It's an easy read and it reminds me of my home in Winnipeg (the story is set in rural Manitoba). Plus, the quirky, charming characters make me smile just to think of them!

How Canadian artists are spending their time isolation:

Begonia on Instagram

Pop diva Begonia has been hosting a wonderfully playful and charming show on her Instagram Live where she sings songs, opens up her account as a "request line" and invites her followers to join her, one at a time. I find her spirit so uplifting and she really makes me laugh some good, hearty laughs! I highly recommend following her and tuning in when she goes live. You won't be disappointed!
