At home with Indie88's Lana Gay

Today’s guest curator is Lana Gay, a familiar voice to music fans across Canada as a radio host. She was formerly with CBC Radio 3 and Vancouver's CFOX, and is currently championing the best new artists at Indie88 in Toronto. Lana's expertise in all things pop culture is on display in her own quarantine newsletter, Indoor Recess, and in her diverse recommendations for your isolation viewing, listening and reading pleasures.

Jesse Jams (16 minutes)

I’m a big fan of Edmonton director Trevor Anderson and his lens for storytelling. This 15-minute short profiles Jesse Jams, a young Indigenous musician. It’s as entertaining as it is informative; a brief window into the complications of mental illness, inequality and the hope that understanding, community and music can provide. Anderson has made his film available for viewing on-line until the festival circuit resumes. — Lana Gay

Nobody Cares by Anne T. Donahue (Book)

Anne T. Donahue’s 2018 book of essays is the equivalent to a friend who has an anecdote to empathize with you over whatever situation you’ve found yourself in. Her chapter on anxiety really helped me through my own, and her honesty and humour will distract you from the never-ending news cycle. — LG

Burnout by Anupa Mistry (Podcast)

One of my favourite arts and culture writers, Anupa Mistry, launched this project when she was burnt out and looking for inspiration from friends and community. These short interviews with creatives have a realness and vulnerability to them that make you feel like you’re part of the conversation about creative sustainability. Another bonus is that each episode is a beautiful introduction to albums, books and art that may not have been on your radar. — LG
