Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,

Major global brands like Ben & Jerry’s, North Face, Patagonia, and Eddie Bauer have joined a boycott of Facebook, citing the platform’s consistent practice of amplifying hateful and racist content.

Yet the Government of Canada continues to funnel public money to this disgraced company – some $17 million in 2018-19.

How is it that multinational corporations are taking a stronger moral stand against Facebook’s complicity in spreading racism than the government of Canada? Do profit-seeking companies now care more about public safety than our government?

By continuing to send public dollars to Facebook, the Government of Canada is supporting a company that promotes violence-inciting content against people protesting systemic racism and content that politicizes and undermines public health responses to COVID-19.

Mr. Trudeau, please show us that you care about our democracy: join the world's corporate leaders and pull all government advertising from Facebook and Instagram.

Public money should not support hate

Mark Zuckberg's Facebook has a problem: it has allowed itself to be overrun by hate and propaganda, so much so that the world's biggest companies are pulling all ads from Facebook.

Yet the Canadian government continues to advertise with this disgraced company. In 2018-19, Ottawa spent millions on Facebook ads. That's our money, going to a company that makes billions by facilitating the downfall of civilized democracy.

Do Coca-Cola and Unilever have a stronger moral compass than the Government of Canada?

This has to stop.
